We tried to read the fee pages of 100 UK-published journals: 4 say on their own pages that authors pay nothing; 21 charge authors or sell optional open access; for 75 we found no clear statement. Flat amounts: 10 journals from 1,758 to 4,385 USD; 6 journals from 1,400 to 2,610 GBP; 2 journals from 1,920 to 2,475 GBP; EUR; USD.

How to read this page

This is a selection, not a census. DOAJ lists 2,292 journals published in the United Kingdom, 527 of them with no APC. We picked the largest UK-published open access journals that charge and the largest that do not, with a cap per publisher, then tried to read each journal’s own page for what it says about author charges. The page address is recorded for every row, and rows were read on 21 October 2026.

Caveat. These readings were made with automated page reading and have not yet been double-checked by hand; quotations are therefore not published here. A journal is listed as charging nothing only where its own page says so. Where we found no statement, or the page could not be read, it is listed as unclear, not as free. Amounts are list prices in the currency the journal states, before tax, waivers and institutional agreements.

What the examples show

21 of the 100 journals charge authors or sell optional open access, 4 say they charge nothing and 75 are unclear.

Most publisher sites in this set (Wiley, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis, SAGE, Springer Nature, BMJ) refuse automated reading, so the larger share of this list is unclear for that reason alone. Do not read it as free. Where a journal’s own page was readable the figure often differs from DOAJ’s: DOAJ is a lead, not a price list.
