Checked 6 October 2026
Copy editing of a 3,000-word paper runs about $160–$260 at the large services (Enago $174, Taylor & Francis from $0.057 per word, Editage from $0.06 per word, Scribbr about $0.017 per word at the slowest turnaround). Substantive editing is roughly $250–$450; subject-matter “scientific” editing $600–$1,545. A cover letter is $40–$60 extra; formatting $75–$125. An APC waiver, if your country qualifies, is worth $1,000–$7,000 — do that first.

What the price buys
- Copy / language editing (Enago Copy, Editage Advanced, Scribbr, Springer Nature Silver, T&F Essential): grammar, spelling, word choice, consistency. Not structure, not science.
- Substantive / premium (Enago Substantive, Springer Nature Gold, T&F Comprehensive): language plus flow and clarity, sometimes a re-edit after reviewer comments — Springer Nature Gold includes unlimited re-editing for one year; Enago and Editage charge $0.02 per word.
- Scientific / top-journal (Enago Top Impact, Springer Nature Scientific, Wiley Top Journal): a subject-matter editor, comments on argument and presentation, sometimes a report. Three to eight times the copy-editing price.
- Free items on the pages read: Enago lists a plagiarism check as free; AJE lists a grammar check as free.
What no price page tells you
- Rush delivery is the main multiplier: Enago Copy Editing goes $174 → $225 (×1.3) and Substantive $252 → $432 (×1.7) between 6-day and 1-day; Scribbr $161 → $297 (×1.8) between 7-day and 24-hour.
- “From” prices are the cheapest tier at the smallest word count; a typical 5,000–7,000-word research article lands well above them, and Enago quotes manuscripts over 5,100 words individually.
- Editing is not a waiver. If your country qualifies for an APC waiver, that is worth $1,000–$7,000; an edit is $150–$600. Check your country · calculator.
- Publisher-branded services (Springer Nature, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Elsevier) are the ones people search by name. None of the price pages we read makes any claim about acceptance at the publisher's own journals, and none states the opposite.
What an editing certificate is
Some journals ask authors whose first language is not English for proof that the manuscript was professionally edited. Providers issue a certificate for this; on the pages read 6 October 2026:
| Provider | Certificate | Cost | In the provider's words |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enago | yes — Copy and Substantive Editing | “FREE editing certificate under both of our editing services” | “proof that your manuscript was reviewed by professional native-English editors and that the technical language, grammar, spelling, and formatting are correct”; “a number of journals ask for a certificate of editing from the author at the time of manuscript submission” |
| AJE | yes — Standard, Premium, VIP, Scientific | included; no separate fee shown | “AJE will provide a certificate confirming that your paper was edited by AJE”; valid if the proposed changes are incorporated |
| Springer Nature Author Services | yes | included | “Note that the certificate does not cover changes made after our editing.” |
| Taylor & Francis Editing Services | yes — Essential tier | included | “submission ready manuscript with an editing certificate” |
Editage, Scribbr, Wiley and Charlesworth: not confirmed on the pages read. Three things the certificate is not: a guarantee of acceptance (no provider claims one), a substitute for the journal's own language check, or valid after you edit the text again (Springer Nature says so explicitly). Which journals require it is a per-journal instruction — check the journal's Instructions for Authors.
How we checked
Prices read from each provider's public price page on 6 October 2026 at the word count and turnaround shown in the table. Per-word figures are our division of the displayed price by the displayed word count. Providers change prices without notice; reconfirm on their page before ordering. JournalFees has no editing service and, as of 6 October 2026, no referral agreement with any provider listed; if that changes, the affected links will be marked and this line updated.
Questions
How much does proofreading cost per word?
On the pages we read on 6 October 2026: about $0.017 per word (Scribbr, 7-day turnaround, 8,000 words) to $0.06 (Editage Advanced, “from”), with Enago Copy Editing at $0.058 and Taylor & Francis Essential from $0.057. Publisher-branded services price per manuscript instead, from $91 (Springer Nature Silver).
Is the publisher's own editing service better for that publisher's journals?
None of the price pages we read makes any claim about acceptance at the publisher's own journals, and none states the opposite. Choose on turnaround, re-editing terms and whether a subject-matter editor is included.
Do I need editing to get an APC waiver?
No. Waivers are decided on country or institution, not language. How APC waivers work.
What is an editing certificate?
A document from the editing service confirming the manuscript was professionally edited; some journals ask non-native authors for one. Enago and AJE include it at no extra charge; Springer Nature notes it does not cover changes made after the edit.
