Should I choose a Wiley hybrid or fully open access journal?

The choice matters more than at most publishers. Hybrid journals let you publish free via the subscription route, but never grant APC waivers. Fully open access journals require payment (or a waiver if you qualify) — you cannot avoid the APC. If you're from a waiver-eligible country and publish in a hybrid, you pay the full APC. If you publish subscription-only in the same journal, you pay nothing.

Detail

Hybrid: three sub-choices

Publish subscription-only (free to author, 12-month embargo, no waivers possible). Publish open access (you pay full APC, no waiver ever). Or publish under a transformative agreement (your institution covers the APC).

Fully open access: two sub-choices

Pay full APC directly. Apply for a waiver (only works if you're in one of 77+28 eligible countries). No subscription route exists — the journal is fully OA.

The trap

Authors from waiver-eligible countries who submit to hybrid journals often assume the waiver will apply. It doesn't. Hybrid journals are explicitly excluded from Wiley's waiver policy — the reasoning is that authors can publish free via subscription route.

The counter-trap

If your funder requires immediate open access (e.g. cOAlition S / Plan S), the subscription route doesn't satisfy the mandate. You're forced to pay the full hybrid APC — which is often higher than fully open access equivalents.

How to check which is which

Every Wiley journal page states its type. Look for 'fully open access' or 'open access option in a subscription journal.' Or check the two Wiley price lists — journals are categorised there.
