What should I know before submitting to a Wiley journal?
Wiley publishes roughly 1,300+ hybrid journals and about 600 fully open access journals across sciences, medicine, and social sciences. The publisher does not publish a single price range — you check per journal. Waivers apply to authors from 77 countries at 100%, 28 more at 50%, but only for fully open access journals. Hybrid journals never have waivers.
Detail
Two publishing routes
Fully open access: about 600 journals where you pay an APC and the article is immediately free. Hybrid: about 1,300 subscription journals with an open access option. The distinction matters because waiver policy differs.
Institutional agreements matter
Wiley operates about 125 institutional agreements worldwide (as of mid-2025). If your institution has one, you may pay nothing regardless of country. Check at authorservices.wiley.com.
VAT/GST reality
EU authors add VAT. Institutions paying on behalf of the author can usually reclaim VAT, or avoid it by providing a VAT registration number (except UK). GST/HST applies for Canadian customers by province.
The 2025 workflow change
Since 7 June 2025, requests for APC coverage in fully open access journals are provisional at submission and confirmed only after acceptance, subject to verification of institution affiliation. Hybrid journals are not affected. This means if you request coverage at submission but your institution or country doesn't verify, you may face the full APC after acceptance.
Editorial independence
Wiley explicitly separates payment from peer review: editors of open access journals are not involved in APC correspondence. Requesting a waiver does not affect the acceptance decision.
