How much does it cost to publish open access in Elsevier?

Elsevier gives different price ranges on different pages of its own site. The main policy page lists $150–$10,100. The author support page lists $500–$5,000. Cell Press journals start at $1,500 with no upper limit stated. There is no single Elsevier price. What you pay depends entirely on which journal accepts you. Since 2024, some fully open access journals participate in the Geographical Pricing pilot, where prices adjust by author country and supersede the waiver scheme for eligible corresponding authors.

Detail

The self-contradiction

Elsevier's Open access page states APCs "range between c$150 and c$10,100 US Dollars, excluding tax." Elsevier's author support page states APCs "range from 500 - 5,000 US dollars." Both are on elsevier.com. Both are current. Neither page acknowledges the other.

What the range means

The bottom of the range applies to niche fully open access journals with low submission volume. The top applies to high-impact medical and life-science titles. Most authors face $2,000–$4,500, but you can only know your journal's price by looking it up individually.

Cell Press pricing sits separately

Cell Press APCs "start at $1,500" — Elsevier does not publish an upper bound. Cell Press is Elsevier's premium life-sciences brand and prices reflect that. See our Cell Press page for details.

Geographical Pricing pilot

Since 2024, some fully open access journals participate in the Geographical Pricing for Open Access (GPOA) pilot — the list price you see is already adjusted for your country. On those journals, the waiver scheme does not apply on top.

VAT and other charges

Prices are quoted before VAT. Colour figures in print, oversized submissions, and language editing may add further charges. The invoiced amount often exceeds the advertised APC.
